I loooooove Caesar III. I like reading about the Roman Empire. It is a city building game that is based on historical information. There's both playing and reading and learning and history to be had - even if you're an adult. I still play the game myself :rofl

The kids found Bella Sara at EB Games and insisted. You groom and care for horses and ride around and explore the world. It is marketed towards little girls which is irritating though.

Jazz Jackrabbit, Word Rescue, Math Rescue, Treasure Mountain, Hugo's House of Horrors were old DOS game favourites as a kid - you can get them for free off the internet now.

Any more suggestions?

I learnt a lot about different systems of government and important turning points in history by playing the Civilisation games :D
