View Full Version : Baby sign
Riley isn't a baby anymore so we're starting rather late, but I've decided to start introducing signs for things. I've decided to use Auslan signs and see how we go. The Auslan website (http://www.auslan.org.au/) is really helpful! :D
We actually started going on the stuff on YouTube which is American and I didn't realise that there were other sign languages :rolleyes I only realised after a day but he had already learned the American sign for "more" so we'll just stick with that for now.

That's really cool :) It's so good to get them started early with this stuff.

Thank you for this! I've been thinking about learning this myself and of course if DS1 was interested :)

Oh we love the Auslan website signbank thingy too! DH bought me the Auslan dictionary as a pressie so we combine the 2. I started signing with DS1 when he was about 6m old. At 4yo he doesn't really use it much anymore but still enjoys asking what the signs for various things are. DS2 (2yo) still signs quite a bit and we are really enjoying learning to sign 'I Can Sing a Rainbow'. Lotsa fun!
He just signed for toast!! I've been trying to include signs where I can (if I know them) and he kinda gets them, kinda not but I eventually get what he's saying, but this was a definite sign for toast. Toast is left hand straight and right hand making a prong with 3 fingers and poking the palm of the flat hand with them and then poking the back of the hand. Well he poked his flat hand with the index finger of his other hand and said "merh" (general word for food) and then did two clenched fists together which started out as the sign for "more" but I think it's his sign for "food" now. So I confirmed, "You want toast?" and he grinned so happily that I understood! Woohoo! He's happily eating his toast now :D
