This evolved yesterday and was sooooo cool!

Got large feathers we'd found on previous travels (we used crow and ibis feathers) and cut the quill tip end off diagonally to form a nib.

For ink we used neat food colouring (which we had left over in cupboard, not to be used in food again since we went additive free :)).

Just dipped the quill nib straight into to bottle of food colouring and write/ scribble/ draw away!! We used a seperate feather for each colour (because I'm anal about mixing the colours :rolleyes).

The straight food colouring gives such brilliant colours (don't know if you can get black food colouring?? I imagine you can). Though next time I would find better bottles for the colours - the FC bottles are a bit lightweight and tip over too easy.

Great idea Anarcostar! I remember wanting to try this with Magpie feathers when I was little but they were a bit too squishy.

Bump! This looks like a lot of fun :) There's no shortage of feathers around here with the arrival of the chookens.

We did this a few years back...great fun. Found out goose feathers are one of the best because of their strength. After cutting on the diagonal, cut a little slit at the end as well and it will write for longer without having to redip. Swan feathers are good too.
