My daughter loves bugs :shrug and today I found a science and history activity book for her that has a few experiments and craft activities to do. One of the ones that I know she'll be fascinated by is where you study some bugs.

You need a funnel and a glass jar, a bright reading lamp and some leaf mulch that's been sitting about in your garden. Put the funnel in the top of the jar and the leaves in it. Then shine the light on it.

The warmth and heat will cause all the creepy crawlies to burrow down and eventually fall into the jar (in 1 - 1.5hrs) so you can check them out!

If I know my daughter she'll be googling them all and finding out names for them .... if she doesn't already know them :lol

And another one with a runner bean plant, a pot, a shoe box, and some cardboard.

Plant the runner bean in the pot. Stick bits of cardboard to the sides of the box about 3 inches apart, on opposing sides up to the top. Cut a small hole (about as big - maybe a bit bigger than a 50c piece) in the top of the box. Put the pot at the bottom of it, put the lid on, and watch it grow towards the hole to find the light, up up and around all the bits of cardboard! (if I didn't explain that very well let me know, it's the sort of thing that needs a photo perhaps, I can scan the one in the book if you need me to :blueroll)

My brain's dead today so that explanation just left me a bit :shrug! A photo whenever you get around to it would be great.

I love that funnel/lamp/mulch idea. Will have to try it, we've got no shortage of mulch laying around!

Yeah that funnel/lamp idea sounds good.

Another one for seeds and sprouting that we tried awhile ago:
Get a milk carton and cut off the top. Put some holes in the bottom and cut a flap as a little door about where the seed will be planted (make sure the door hangs down, not opens sideways like a normal door). Then wrap clear plastic around the carton, covering over the space under the door so the dirt doesn't fall out. Put your dirt in and plant your seed (a big seed is best) as close to the door as possible. Keep the door closed while the seed germinates. You can lift the door every day to see the progress of the seed. Lotsa fun to see a plant germinate 'underground'.

We actually have a bug catcher here that DS was given last christmas, must get that out! Sounds great fun.

it would probably work really well with a bug catcher!
