A PEDOPHILE will now be allowed to visit schools and other public places frequented by children after a judge amended his community-based supervision order.
Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Margaret White today reduced Steven Shane Bickle's supervision order from 20 years to 10 years and removed conditions that had previously banned him from attending any public place where children might frequent.
The condition specifically prohibited Bickle from going within 200m of a school unless he had written permission from a corrective services officer.
Justice White removed the conditions after psychiatrists who assessed Bickle, 53, found his pattern of offending "did not relate to predatory molestation of unfamiliar juveniles''.
However, Bickle, who was released under the community-based supervision order in June 2006 after serving almost 14 years for sex offences against children, was still deemed to have "pedophilic impulses'' that could be triggered by emotional stress.
The psychiatrists conceded that his risk of re-offending remained low provided he did not form a relationship with a woman with dependent children, and that he remains drug and alcohol free.
They also recommended his 20-year supervision order be halved as a 10-year order was sufficient to protect the community.peJustice White agreed and today ordered Bickle's supervision order conclude in May 2016.
Bickle breached his supervision order in June this year after smoking cannabis given to him by his children following the death of his father.
This was the only positive urine sample he had returned for drugs or alcohol since he was first incarcerated in 1992.
