This book, by Zoe Weil, is a helpful read so far. Has anyone else read it? It gives lots of practical examples of common situations and challenges in parenting, and gives ideas of ways to approach them. One example is how negative media can open doors for great conversations, so we should turn ''bad'' experiences into discussions... and not be afraid to approach ''tricky'' subjects. Eg pornography, if our children come across pornography either online, in real life, or via word of mouth, we can then use that to talk about how sex can also be sacred and special. Obviously that one is more for older children, but there are other examples for younger kids. There's alot of talk about the impact of consumerism, and other environmental and social issues too.

it sounds a good read. i hope i do this kind of thing anyway but you know sometimes it is still easy to gloss over things (for me such as smoking, which i just don't want to discuss!) so a gentle reminder is always worth it.

is it geared towards older-kid suggestions/explanations? doh! I've just re-read your sentence that it is geared towards older kids but with younger ones in mind too! what is the age when a child becomes "older"
