Thorpe's now a uni student
Student ... One of our greatest swimmers, Ian Thorpe, is now studying for a Bachelor of Arts at Macquarie University.
HE'S dominated the swimming record books now Ian Thorpe has started swotting for the latest challenge in his life - a university degree.
After dropping out of school as a 14-year-old to focus on his swimming, the Thorpedo was yesterday in deep as a psychology and linguistics student at Macquarie University.
The former swimming champion was a familiar face in the student crowd, attending lectures and making friends among the student set.
Home-schooled throughout his swimming career, the 25-year-old has launched himself into his Bachelor of Arts, after living it up at sponsor parties during the Beijing Olympics last month.
A university spokeswoman said their new student seemed "excited" and anticipated he would major in psychology after donating his talents to a mental health campaign run through the department.
"He is just trying a few things on for size and seeing what he likes," the spokeswoman told Joel Christie.
The new student was at the Macquarie Park campus yesterday, hanging out in the coffee shop and attending his lectures and tutorials like any other undergraduate.
Dressed in a white shirt and brown shorts, Thorpe had only one star touch. "You notice him straight away because of his big designer sunglasses," one campus spy said.
While reportedly followed around by a gaggle of girls, Thorpe is believed to be still in a long-distance relationship with a mystery woman.
