View Full Version : Combined shipping for Rue Kream's book
I just got an email reply from Rue Kream re her book Parenting a Free Child (it seems you can only get copies thru her now). If anyone wants to grab a copy we could do a bulk order and save on shipping.

I'd be interested - maybe if I knew more about the book. And before you ask .. NO google isn't working on my computer (or perhaps I'm confusing laziness with a google malfunction, but I don't care)
Hmm, the only link I have is here (http://www.freechild.info/). And Arun did a review on his blog.

I'm ready to order when you are Avalon!
Okay, let's tally up who is definitely getting a copy, I'll add a poll and leave it open for 2 weeks.
Okay, it's me, Ceres and Mud. I'll do the order on Monday :)

Oh, this thread reminds me to reread my copy it's been a few years since I read it. I gave it to my mum to have a flick through (is a really quick easy read in question and answer style) and it helped things fall into place for her.
Erm, I just realised we're uber-skint atm, I'll order it Thursday when we get paid :lol
Ooh does that mean I can pop my nose in and ask for a copy?
Excellent, thanks Avalon :) Just let me know what you need from me.

Can you PM me your bank account details and let me know how much it is including postage?
Okay, just heard back from Rue,
Hi Linn,
The costs would be:
Books: $14 x 4 = $56
plus
Shipping: $30
Total: $86 ($21.50 per book)
All prices are in US dollars.
My currency converter says that $21.50 USD = $26.05 AUD, plus postage in Australia would be no more than $5.50.

Have just transferred $30.55 to your account. Thankyou!
Done, rounded it up a little.
Also done. Thanks for organising.
I emailed Rue on Monday last week but I haven't heard back from her so I just sent her a followup email. Just keeping you updated :)
Okay heard back from Rue, just paid her through Paypal :eager

Doh! Missed out :bah.
Unless you don't have a home for Aurora's one?
No sorry, I only had confirmations from Ceres, Hush & Mud. We could do another run though?
Avalon, if the books are coming to you first then could you send my copy to Jasmine and I'll pick it up from her when I come back to Aus? Otherwise it'll just be sitting at my parents house in the meantime.
Sure thing, could either you or Jasmine pm me the addy pls?

Wow, so fast! What did you think?
I enjoyed it. A lot resonated with me -- such as the description of some of the problems with school and general ideas about respecting children and their time. Some of it is pretty simplified, but it was interesting because it made me think about why my perspective is a bit different. For instance, there's a big emphasis on the freedom of children, and letting them make their own choices. It mentions having 'habits' rather than 'rules' when it comes to things like crossing the road safely. For us, I'd extend this idea of habits to things like food and TV -- there are types of things that we don't buy, so they aren't on the menu.
The choices we all put forward to our kids (I'm thinking about young kids, especially) are a subset of the vast array of choices available in our culture. I wouldn't take my kids into the supermarket and let them wander the aisles to select something as a snack. I wouldn't subscribe to Foxtel and hand them the remote. I wouldn't take them to Kmart to pick out whatever toy they wanted. That's just not the way we do things, for reasons we're conscious of and we discuss (OK, in a nutshell, I think most of it is crap).
There is a already a thread about whether you call your approach 'radical unschooling', and the book reminded me again why the term doesn't really work for me. The author does explain it as 'just living', which makes sense, but I think I can work through any temptation to do things in a school-like way without needing the term 'unschooling' as a reminder.
I thought it might deal with more of the practical concerns, such as working etc, but it's more about reassuring parents (in many ways) that they should trust that their children will make the right choices and learn what they need to when they want to.
