What you'll need

Old socks
Buttons
Felt
Ice-lolly sticks
Old birthday cards
Colouring pens
A wooden spoon
Fabric
Glue

What to do

Puppets are fun to make and great to play with, especially when acting out stories.

Silly dog – an old sock can be quickly transformed into a "silly dog" puppet. Make a dog from a sock by cutting out two ears from some felt – or any sort of fabric scraps you may have – and sewing them on either side of the heel. Sew on two buttons for eyes, and add some black stitching for a nose (or you can draw these on with a marker pen).

Snake – create a snake from any colour sock. To begin, sew a strip of red rick rack ribbon, starting at the heel and going along the back of the sock. Glue or sew on two black eyes that have been cut out of felt and a red felt tongue.

Stick puppets – a great use for old greeting cards and colouring books! Cut out a few characters from old birthday cards or books, or draw the outline of a character (a cat or teddy bear) and colour it in with your child. Glue a washed ice-lolly stick to the back, which you can use to move the puppet around.

Spoon person – using felt-tip pens, draw a face on an old wooden kitchen spoon. Cut out some clothes for your spoon person from some extra fabric or an old shirt, and glue it on to the handle of the spoon. Don't expect the spoon back for cooking, though!

We made sock puppets this week, to go with a book the kids particularly enjoyed.

Has anybody ever made their own puppet theatre? I always look at the really expensive ones in educational supply catalogues and think Nah, I could do that myself, but I still never have... :uhh

We made felt Spongebob puppets a few months ago. I bought a few cheap felt sheets from Spotlight, and L & I cut them up - he drew the body shapes on and/or directed how he wanted them cut. I sewed the fronts and backs together with the machine, and he glued the bits on that he wanted. We had intended to make a theatre from a box but didn't get around to it. They still play with the puppets and last night L asked for stuff to "make the Krusty Krab", which I'll help him with today, during daylight hours ;)

Our boys borrowed a craft book from the library and want to make Mario and Luigi puppets this week. We found some white fabric at the op shop, just need to get fabric markers. Should be a bit of fun in this as my DS has never sewn before! Gully Jr has had a bit of practice in it. We have about 99 batman puppets mounted on tongue depressors from my DS's batman obsession phase too.

We made our puppet theatre the other day. Got a carseat box & cut a window out of the top of one of the sides. Opened it up so it had a door at the back & viola, puppet theatre. We were going to decorate it but they got too carried away & it's still just a box with a hole in it. They love it though! Cost = $0. I was going to make it reversable so it's a puppet theatre one way & a shop the other way. A quick & easy way to pretty it up would be to drape some fabric over it.

Beatrice, if you google image puppet theatre you'll get heaps of ideas.

I'm too ambitious I think :lol I envisage something sturdy out of plywood, but we have a squillion boxes in the shed so I should really use them, huh?

K loikes this sock puppet gig. She wanted to make an elephant today but we don't have any unloved grey socks. I shall have to see if a pink or green or blue elephant will be acceptable :)

I hear you on the ambition. We've got a small bookcase I want to turn into a shop/puppet theatre too. I dream about it having interchangeable fronts so it can be either, with curtains & the ability to do marionettes as well as hand puppets, etc, etc. I think I get my over-engineered ideas from a childhood watching the Goodies!

Feed your ambition... http://www.google.com.au/images?hl=en&q=toy%20puppet%20theatre&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi

I've made a temporary puppet theater but putting a sheet over a broom handle. Worked well and easy to do - especially if your children will forget about it in a few days so you don't wnat to spend too much time on it.

I think we're doing a unit on puppets ;) We've just made paper bag puppets for the cast of Hairy Maclary :lol

How cool! Got pics? My personal favourite is Schnitzel von Krumb (with a very low tum). :lol

I do, but crappy mobile phone ones, and I haven't uploaded them yet.

I'm amused at how easily it is to convert all this crafty fun and play into a "unit" for K's portfolio. Photos of these, and the sock puppets they made, and details about the various books they're based on, and different books we've read with puppets as a theme, and voila! Plus of course now K wants to make finger puppets, and shadow puppets, and various different ones she's seen in the books :lol
