I bought a set of wooden cuisinaire rods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisenaire_rods) the other day. I've been meaning to get a set for ages.

I'm wondering what sort of resources you all have around the home for playing with. I'm looking to building up our bookshelf with educational (or not-so-educational ;)) toys.

Oooooooh, DH & I were so excited when we found a set of cuisenaire rods in a second hand shop. M thinks her ordinary cube shaped blocks are much cooler though.

We found cuisenaire rods in an op shop too, GD :D We also have Base 10 blocks and a set of nesting rods from Math-U-See. Our most-played-with maths toy is definitely pattern blocks, though! http://www.softgame.net/math/pattern-blocks.htm Another tesselating maths toy which is lots of fun all round are the Batty Lizards, based on Escher's drawings. There's also a couple of other shapes, but we love the bats and lizards. http://www.seriouspuzzles.com/tess-lizards.html

I got mine from the local toy shop. The brand is Fun Factory.

They're great maths resources, Beatrice. Thanks! Love the pattern blocks - they remind me of my childhood - in a good way :D

Something occurred to me for this thread as I was putting M to sleep. She adores what she calls her "orange book" which is actually a catalogue from an international photography agency. YK, the kind that sells magazines the image that they're looking for to fit their story etc. It has absolutely everything in it & although DH & I get really tired of "reading" it over and over again I can see that it's going to be a great resource in the future & we'll probably try to find more. She knows about stuff like the Materhorn, the bull run in spain, yoga, lava, what happens to moving lights in a slow exposure photograph and hundreds of other things because she's asked us to explain the pictures in the book.

Ha! That's a great idea, GD. Where do you get those?
