GreenGully got me onto this site. It's an early learning program made by ABC. I love that it is narrated with an australian accent! There is a free trial for a few weeks then you can purchase membership. DS is hooked on it, I think it's pretty ace.

We had a look at it a few months ago but K wasn't ready for it yet. I've got it bookmarked for when she's a bit older, though :)

Auds liked it for a bit, but she said she doesn't like "being told what to do" :lol I think it is a little repetetive for her... She likes working her way round the maps though. She goes between reading eggs and starfall depending on what she feels like.

Has anyone got the books? I keep seeing them in the post office and wondering whether they're anything more than a money-spinner :lol

I've seen them in the post office too, they look ok but we have so many workbooks already I didn't bother.

J has 2 of the work books. They aren't all that good, but he likes them.

We live reading eggs! The book in the post office which used to $20 are now $10, well worth it imo. You get 2 weeks subscription to the site with the purchase of a book too.

The boys really love it so we paid the $90 subscription which allows access for 12mths.

I was wondering how much it cost. Jaz tried it out this arvo. She's all for games on the pooter but when I said I had found this site that teaches you how to read she screwed up her face and said "I dont want to learn to read" as if it was the silliest suggestion I have ever made :lol But then when she tried it out she really seemed to like it. Apart from the beginning bit of the trial which she got bored with really quickly.

I joined us up this arvo too! Kira is loving it and powering through. $90 for 12 months... hmmm. Might be worth it. It's not OTT with praise unlike a lot of other free sites, and yeah the Aussie accent is more appealing (but it's more the lack of stupid praising that I like). I just told Kira it was a new site for her, didn't mention it was about reading at all. She just has fun with them :lol.

Yes in hindsight not mentioning the learning to read part would probably have been wise :lol

I think you can buy the CD roms rather than subscribing too but I haven't looked into which way works out cheaper.

Malachi's just started playing with this and starfall. He's picked most of it up really well, I was surprised how quickly he got used to moving the mouse around as he's never really done it before, and he's really quick at the memory games on starfall, after only a few days. I've noticed he had trouble with the bit on reading eggs where you pick the word that starts with the sound... ie if the sound is 'm' and the words are 'men' and 'sun' or whatever, he'll try to sound them out and go 'mennnnnn-kuh' and 'suuuuuuuun', sounding out the middle or end sounds, or adding extra sounds, but missing the actual first sound they're asking about.... anyway, long way of saying,I like reading eggs and so does Malachi, and it's been useful for showing me where he might need some help :D

Yasmine and Storm both enjoyed the sample games, and both wanted to do more. As soon as we have the dosh, we'll be signing up.

I signed Lauren up, and she played it once. grrr so I am loathe to pay money for anything like this if I can't be sure she is going to use it :(

our eldest used this site when it was first launched and loved it. I renewed her subscription, she played it twice more then was bored, i think it was good for the initial play/learn, but the extended version wasn't enough to hold her attention. I feel it's great for beginners to phonetics. good luck.

Just a quick post to let everyone know the HEA discount for Reading Eggs is changing, if you subscribe before 31st July 2011 you pay $19.98 per child for a year of Reading Eggs, after 1st August 2011 it will be $49.57 per child for a year, its still a 38% discount, but obviously if you are considering it, its best to do it now, as the price difference is HUGE.
